Bonita Unified School Board

Unprecedented Times Calls for Unprecedented Change Leveraging Unprecedented  Opportunities

There’s no denying that we’re currently facing unprecedented times. Schools are different. Interactions are different. The work-life balance is different. For many, mind frames are different. However, unprecedented times does not call for continuing to do the same thing and in turn expect different results. Rather, it calls for unprecedented change leveraging unprecedented opportunities. As a Doctor, Health Advocate, leader, member of this community, and most importantly … a parent, I believe now is the time to embrace health, empower our kids, and strengthen our schools! Now is the time to identify and address the root causes of our problems as opposed to masking them and subsequently trying to fix their consequences. Now is the time where the cross-section between health and education have met and must be leveraged more than ever. Now is the time to lay strong preventative solutions in place to help our community stand strong against any unexpected cards dealt AND create more tools, resources, and implement realistic strategies making our kids, families, teachers, support staff, schools, and the entire community healthier and stronger. Now is the time for unprecedented change.

Educational Success Achieved Via Mental, Physical, & Environmental Wellness

I would be honored for the opportunity to contribute and bring my unique experiences and professional background to the BUSD. I believe we must all play a role in helping our community grow, prosper, and most importantly, stay healthy, particularly in these challenging times. How we teach, care, and nurture our children is arguably the greatest responsibility that we all share, and I am confident that my educational and professional background can provide a unique perspective. More specifically, I wish to emphasize stronger focus on wellness and health – both physical and mental – as well as boost the Special Needs programs in our schools. Moreover, given today’s increased use and reliance on technology, I believe it is crucial to expand upon our technology and Internet safety training, including on the issues of social media, cyber bullying, and privacy.

About
Dr. Afshin K.Mehr

Hello,

My name is Dr. Afshin Kaivan-Mehr, D.C. and I am running for BUSD Governing Board Member. I am a Doctor of Chiropractor, practicing in  La Verne since 2007.  As a Doctor, health advocate, and an active member of this community, I have been treating our students, teachers, and the staff for many years. During such process, I have come to the realization that we must create preventative solutions for our community, as opposed to trying to take remedial measures for consequences.

I have met many of you, but if we haven’t met yet, allow me to introduce myself. My educational and professional background has been a unique journey, which has allowed me to learn and gain experienced from different places and settings. I attended high school and University in the diverse and vibrant city of Toronto, Canada.  After graduating, I moved  to Dallas, Texas, to attend Parker College of Chiropractic. From there, I moved to California where I have had the privilege of calling San Dimas and La Verne my home for over 16 years! This is where I live, where I work, and most importantly, where my beautiful wife Nina and I have raised our wonderful children – Emma and Aiden – since they were born. As a family, we feel a deep sense of devotion to this amazing community and feel extremely blessed and grateful for everything the community has provided us throughout the years. Now, this is my opportunity to further give back!

I have been involved in many diverse community organizations and impactful community events, while also serving on several governor boards and organizations within our local and state level, including:

  • Former board member and active member of La Verne Chamber of Commerce, 2007-present.
  • Executive board member and safety Director of AYSO,  San Dimas and La Verne, 2018-present.
  • Former executive board director and treasurer for the California Chiropractic Association CCA, 2017-2018.
  • Chair Committee of Health and wellness Expo in the city of La Verne through the Chamber of Commerce, 2014-2015.

My involvement with these various organizations throughout the years can be explained in one simple sentence: I love my community and believe strongly in public service. This is why I would be honored for the opportunity to contribute and bring my unique experiences and professional background to the BUSD.  I believe we must all play a role in helping our community grow, prosper, and most importantly, stay healthy, particularly during these challenging times!

Thank you,
Dr. Afshin K.Mehr
