Do you suffer from foot pain? Are you resorting to over-the-counter pain medications, insoles, or heel pads? Foot pain can be painful and frustrating, particularly if it hinders your ability to walk, workout, enjoy the fresh air outside, or spend time playing with the kids. Luckily, chiropractic treatment may be your solution to relieve the pain.
Foot Pain
The foot is comprised of 26 bones, each capable of causing foot pain. If any of these bones are misaligned, pain results. You may feel discomfort on the top of your foot, ball of your foot, in the arch, on the sides, back of the foot/heel, or bottom of the foot/heel. A chiropractor, such as Dr. Mehr of Foothill Family Chiropractic out of La Verne, can align and adjust your foot to offer long-lasting pain relief.
Causes of Common Foot Misalignment
We know foot misalignment causes pain, however, what causes the misalignment? Well, your foot can be misaligned for a number of reasons. For instance, if you’re suffering from pointed bony outgrowth, referred as heel spurs, painful foot misalignment can arise. Or, if the elastic tissues spanning the length of your foot are stressed, known as plantar fasciitis, you may notice stabbing pains. On the other hand, if the metatarsal bones in the ball of your foot are misaligned, you may suffer from metatarsalgia. Or, if your foot arches are weak, you’ll may have to deal with much discomfort. Other common causes include excessive pressure on your feet from your body weight, nerve irritation, or even compression in your lower back.
Treating foot pain
Although potentially debilitating, you can stomp on the pain. There are options to provide relief. For example, you can rest your feet. Or, you can wear supportive footwear (i.e. insoles, athletic tape, heal pads, heel cups, and splints). You can apply ice. You can take over-the-counter pain and inflammation reducers, such as ibuprofen (i.e. Advil or Motrin), naproxen (i.e. Aleve), or other forms of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). Or, you can partake in other techniques, including losing weight (particularly if you’re suffering from plantar fasciitis), doing low-impact exercises, or stretching.
While the above can be helpful for relieving pain, the results can be temporary. In fact, they may simply mask the pain as opposed to treat it. Without first uncovering the underlying cause and then correcting the problem, the above techniques may not create the long-lasting relief you desire and deserve.
Chiropractic treatment, however, is more than addressing back pain. With the help of a chiropractor, you can address one of the main reasons you may be experiencing foot pain, misalignment of one or more of your twenty six bones.
