Trying to lose weight?
By Dr. Afshin Kaivan-Mehr
Can you believe we’re only days away from ringing in the New Year? While the majority make, and shortly after break, resolutions, the New Year still brings in a great opportunity to set goals to better yourself. With losing weight and living a healthier and more active lifestyle being one of the main resolutions made, I thought I’d dedicate this blog to showing you how you can reach your weight loss goals with chiropractic care.
We all should know, there’s no magic bullet to losing weight. It requires a healthy diet and exercise. That said, incorporate chiropractic care and maximize the effectiveness of your efforts to not only reach your weight loss goals much faster, but maintain the results as well.
Wondering how chiropractic care is connected to weight loss? Curious how receiving a chiropractic adjustment can help you lose weight? Well, first off, unlike other programs requiring use of pills, surgery, or fads, chiropractic care is based on holistic, non-invasive practices and lifestyle changes creating long-term results. One way to accomplish this is via chiropractic adjustments.
Reason being, the spinal column is comprised of nerves running throughout it, connecting and sending messages from the brain to the rest of the body. However, when the spine is misaligned and therefore there is subluxation, studies have shown consequent weight increases. This is due to imposing a communication hindrance onto the brain and not receiving signals such as hunger and eating cues. In other words, one can over eat, not knowing their body is already full. Add the pain and suffering that comes along with subluxation (slight misalignment), and it’s highly probable your range of motion is limited, making it difficult to maintain an active lifestyle. Therefore, by having your back adjusted, you are placing your spine in correct alignment and as a result receiving proper communication of hunger and eating cues so that you will be able to know when you are full. In addition, with the elimination of pain, you will be able live a more active lifestyle and increase your exercise habits.
Wait for it…there’s more. Eliminating the subluxation of the spine allows the body to better absorb essential nutrients and oxygen, thus increasing the effectiveness of your workouts and diets. Subsequently, regular adjustments can also help promote and achieve firm and toned muscles, further reducing your propensity for unhealthy weight gain.
Now let me point something out, receiving chiropractic adjustments while still eating fatty and processed foods and not getting off the couch is not going to help you lose weight. To lose weight you need to create a caloric deficit, where you are burning more calories than consuming. You need to burn those calories through physical activity, preferably a combination of cardio and strength training. And the calories consumed should be from quality and healthy foods, not sugar filled and processed junk. That said, chiropractic care comes into play by aligning your spine and allowing you to receive those cues that will help you push the plate away and not over eat. It’ll help you stop thinking you’re hungry when in fact you’re not. It’ll help you prevent adding more calories into your body than you need. It’ll help you get physically active once again and if you are already physically active, it’ll help you take it up a notch. Chiropractic care will magnify your efforts so you can improve your results.
On a side note, if knowing what to eat and when to eat it is an issue in itself, have no worries. Trained and practicing in nutrition, as well as having our own nutritional protocol, we can overhaul your nutrition too.
